Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture needles are nothing like the needles used to give injections; they are much thinner. The needles are extremely fine, flexible, and sterile. It is merely a tool to correct the energy imbalance in the body. You may feel a brief sensation as the needle passes the skin.

What does Acupuncture Feel Like?

As the needle begins to work and the energy effect occurs, one may feel numbness, heat, dull aching, or tingling where the needle is located. The needles are left in place usually for about 15-20 minutes. They may be rotated or sometimes stimulated electrically.

What happens on my first visit?

The initial visit may take up to two hours and include a detailed review of your medical history and symptoms. This includes the taking of the pulse and inspection of the tongue according to Chinese medicine.  From this information, an individualized treatment plan is developed. Subsequent visits generally take 45 minutes to an hour.

How many sessions are necessary?

This depends on the specific case. As a general rule, patients will experience an improvement in symptoms within 4-10 treatments. Acute problems usually respond more quickly; chronic problems can take longer.
